Internationally distinguished scholars and editors visiting Management and Organization in Pori October 16th and Turku October 17th
Professor Jean Helms Mills and Professor Albert Mills will give a guest lecture on “Making Sense of Sense Making: The Critical Sensemaking Method” at the Turku School of Economics, Pori unit on Monday October 16th at 14.00-15.00 in lecture hall 125.
This lecture is open to all students and faculty at the University Consortium in Pori.
This presentation focusses of the Critical Sensemaking approach to understanding how actors construct a sense of a given situation. It begins with discussion of the trajectory of the approach from the work of Karl Weick (Sensemaking – SM) to the notion of Critical Sensemaking (Helms Mills, 2003). In the process the ontological differences between SM and CSM are outlined and discussed. The talk then moves to an outline of the heuristic of sensemaking `properties,’ and the contexts in which they are understood, including formative contexts, organizational rules, and discursive ideas. The presentation concludes with examples of the applications of CSM.

Jean and Albert Mills are Professors of Management at the Saint Mary’s University in Canada. Albert is a 20% Professor at the University of Eastern Finland (Kuopio) and Jean is an International Reader at Soc & Kom (Swedish School of Social Sciences-University of Helsinki) and a Docent at Jyväskylä and University of Eastern Finland. Currently they are both at Hanken Visiting Scholars (Goddess Institute). They recently took over editorship of Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management: An International Journal (QROM). Their research interests are in the areas of gender at work, existentialism and organizational life, Critical Sensemaking, Critical Management Studies (CMS), and management and organizational history.
Jean is currently Associate Editor of Gender, Work and Organization, and serves on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals, including Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; the Journal of Management Education; the Journal of Workplace Rights; Organization; and Management & Organizational History (M&OH). She also previously served as the Associate Editor (`The Americas’) on Culture and Organization (C&O), and on the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences (CJAS).
Albert previously served as the CMS Area Editor of the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences and Associate Editor of the Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology (CRSA) and served on the editorial boards of Leadership and the Administrative Sciences Quarterly. He is currently an associate editor of four scholarly journals - Organization; Gender, Work and Organization (GWO); the International Journal of Work Innovation; and Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; the Journal of Management Education; the Journal of Workplace Rights; and Management & Organizational History (M&O).
